Australias’ Barrier Reef

The Cairns marina is home to a fleet which consists of quite a few pretty incredible dive vessels. The newest member of the fleet is the Seastar, pretty much unveiled this past month.

This unique spectacular cutting edge vessel is ninety feet long, and would make the trip out to Seastar’s scuba dive sites in under an hour or so. The boat is certainly quick and also stable, along with tons of shaded and air-conditioned cabin space.

Seastar Cruises also has constantly prided themselves on providing an extremely exclusive and personal adventure, and they may be altering their experditions to be able to improve the small group experiences that they have normally supplied.

We tend to really like the particular basic fact that their owners control the actual numbers on board to exactly 40 persons, incredibly well below the actual total capacity of the charter boat; which would mean that there can be a lot of breathing space on board. Using a speedier boat they can abandon a little less earlier, however , still be typically the first vessel to head to Michaelmas Cay, so snorkelers and birdwatchers get it all to themselves. This journey is unquestionably the A-list cruise with regards to birdwatchers that really want to combine a good reef escape which includes an opportunity to view exotic seabird varieties.

A nice a lot faster cruise out also will mean extra time could possibly be spent at Michaelmas Cay combined with Seastar’s different dive mooring on Hastings Reef; customers can right now spend more than 5 hours out at the reef.

Last but not least, once the Japanese people return to their yearly fall/winter scientific whale hunt, they might anticipate the multitude of admirers and protectors regarding Migaloo to be protesting the hunt. Although the Japanese proposal to be able to keep on industrial whaling was in fact knocked back, for the very first time in several years the suspect scientific quest may include the executing of 75 Humpback whales, hence Migaloo might be at risk whenever this individual travels to Antarctic waters the following springtime as well as summertime. The Great Barrier Reef has also been awarded the world Travel and leisure for Future honor for Greatest Vacation location during this year’s Tourism with regard to Future Awards held in Lisbon, Italy. The honor, given by the World Vacation and Tourism Authorities, is regarded as one of the main “oscars” in the travel related market.

Because of the media reports related to the risks connected with climate change to the Great Barrier Reef it’s indeed nice how the reef has received an award that has a subject that has the words “Tourism with regard to Tomorrow” and now we maintain great hope for international endeavors truly being made to reduce the quantity of carbon caused by mankinds lifestyle. The critical conclusions, hardships, in addition to planning still has yet to arrive, yet most people continue being optimists on the subject of proper protection of the reef.

Over the previous 10 years great progress have already been made to protect the reef, using a synchronised operations scheme that experts claim will look at things both about the reef like angling as well as tourisms, as well as in near by seaside lands. Around 30% of the Great Barrier Reef is completely shielded from offshore fishing along with other extractive situations throughout the past 10 years.

The award came with the following Judges’ decision: “Enormous progression has been recently made in order to involve the incredibly multifaceted tourism market in the management of quite significant maritime conservation area.”

The threat of climate change stretches well outside of the Great Barrier Reef, in addition to it’s causes consist of humans and also businesses al over the world, not just Queensland. All of us trust to successfully see a strong coalition of nations working to scale back greenhouse gas effectively, and also to see that group involve both Australia plus the United States.

A Cape York Adventure

3rd January 2012 / Author: marty

Departing civilisation behind at Cairns, we ventured along the Peninsula Developmental Road. This further descended into a deeply corrugated track which wound along the way of the telegraph line, between giant rainforest trees and also across innumerable rivers approximately the little Aboriginal area of Bamaga on Cape York. “The Entrance to HELL — go back if possible”, stated an encouraging handwritten sign as we headed off into the true wilderness!

River crossings of all manner and form punctuated our journey — with axle-deep red mud, decrepit handmade bridges (the particular odd log missing occasionally to add to task), deep bull dust or fast flowing water to keep you alert. It was a vintage four wheel drive venture. The biggest challenge, however, was the crossing of the Jardine River.

Even in the drier times of year, the Jardine River, just 35 km to the south of Bamaga, was a wide, not too deep, quick-flowing river. In 1984, the luxury of a small car punt had just become available to carry the vehicles of the less adventurous across this famous barrier to the princely sum of $15. Many heated battles then erupted on the banks of the Jardine while cautious wives and thrill-seeking partners debated the relative merits in the challenging river crossing as well as the tame punt ride. As newlyweds, we too had each of our dispute here, but in our case it absolutely was the thrill-seeking wife whom desired the river adventure!

To drive across a river like this requires substantial preparation. A diesel motor like ours requires an extended air snorkel to bring in air from well over any possible water level. Tyres must be deflated, waterproof covers packed around the engine and openings for instance fuel tanks and doors have to be securely sealed up. We watched with concern as many vehicles attempted the crossing — and a lot failed, becoming stranded mid-river with waters swirling around the driver’s feet and camping gear floating at the rear of the vehicle!

Finally the thrill-seeking better half prevailed. A group of fellow Cape York drivers came to our assistance and loaned us a snorkel as well as covers which fitted our vehicle. So with our vehicle trussed up just like a Christmas lunch, we drove down in to the swirling waters of the heaving Jardine.

Across the river we drove, pushing a high bow-wave just before us. Steve said it felt so good he wanted to turn around and keep driving in the river! Then through a heart-stopping very deep hole close to the end and up the steep bank we went, conquerors of the Jardine. I bet they don’t have this much fun when doing one of the organised Cape York Tours.

Our dripping vehicle on the positive side seemed little the worse for the adventure. However, it cost us more to replace the gearbox oils which had become waterlogged than the little punt ride could have cost. So sanity prevailed upon our return journey 30 days later and the Landcruiser took a dry ride across the Jardine on the ferry!

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world stretching from the northernmost tip of the continent to just north of Fraser Island. The great barrier reef stretches over 1600 miles along the eastern coast.

The Great Barrier Reef is a sanctuary for well over 1100 fish species, whales, dolphins, dugongs. Many different types of birdlife live on the reef.

The coral which builds the reef itself is also a living thing. When it dies it turns light grey, and creates the structure for new coral growth. The different types of coral grow at varying speeds, while some are very quick growing, some varieties take well over a 100 years to mature. The vivid colours are not because of the coral but by the growth of algae living on it.

The great barrier reef needs a tropical climate as it requires on warm shallow waters to thrive. Nutrient rich water and just the right amount of light is needed to keep the coral healthy.

With hundreds of thousands of square miles of reef it is a diving and snorkelling paradise. Various day cruises are available from the mainland right along the coastline. Even if you don’t swim you can see the wonders of the reefs wonders through glass bottom boat tours.

My Day Trip to The Reef with Deep Sea Divers Den

14th December 2011 / Author: marty

Monday , 26th August, and what a lovely North Queensland day to go to the Barrier Reef… and what a good decision to try “Reef Quest”, from Cairns which gave us an absolutely unforgettable day at the reef.
After flying from Canberra a couple of days ago I was looking forward to some balmy weather. It was a bit chillier than I had predicted and I was glad I had remembered Jeans and a warm jacket!
I’ve been going to Cairns for about 11 years and have been out on quite a few Reef Trips and let’s face it, they all do just about the same thing: 2 different reefs, snorkelling gear, lunch and afternoon tea – so it’s the service and little extras that count.

From the moment you check in to the moment you disembark, the service and crew are very professional. The staff to guest ratio is good, as there was always someone available to help with any queries or requests. The staff seem genuinely happy and their service and attention were really good.

Reef Quest issue a wetsuit for free which is normally an extra (usually $8.00 hire) on other tours. As a snorkeller a wetsuit gives you a little protection from the harsh sun and also buoyancy which makes snorkelling easier.

Reef Quest have a selection of 15 different dive sites and choose the best 2 reefs based on the days weather. A guided snorkelling option is also available at both reefs and this is a real bonus for first time snorkelers or anyone wanting to find out a little bit more about the reef’s ecosystems. The snorkel guide dives down and picks up things like seaweed and bits of dead coral and brings them up so people can have a closer look. They also know where the nicest coral is, so it does add a bit to the Cairns experience.

The meal was good with lots of variety including pasta salad, bean salad, green salad, tropical fruits, cold meats, bread rolls and soup. There was tea and coffee and cold water available all day.

All in all it was a top quality day out.

Guess What, I Recently Bought A Kayak

24th November 2011 / Author: marty

Nine years after being hired by a sea kayak touring and sales company I’ve finally got around to buying myself one. I have spent the last seven years paddling the areas rivers in an older style white water kayak, but this just wasn’t suitable for the coastal zones.
This was getting extremely frustrating as I live a quarter mile from the beach at Clifton Beach, a coastal suburb just north of Cairns .
I’d already paddled the Russell River numerous times, the Upper Barron River was getting a bit repetitive as well, so I had to get into that ocean.
As Cairns is a small country center the purchase of a seakayak and the assorted accessories is not the most simple task. You can either go with Ebay, wait for someone to sell it in the paper or just work with what you can find local.
Thats what I did. I made the most of what I could find, with the notion of then turning it into what I want. I purchased a fairly affordable imported boat brand new. Now I knew that the fittings would be cheap, I also knew it probably wouldn’t be 100% watertight. Luckily I was enjoyably surprised.
The only fittings that will need changing are the elastic cord deck ropes and elastic cord steering lines. I may substitute the internal steering lines with stainless wire as needs be.
As for kitting out the seakayak with emergency gear my list is as follows
* V Flag for attratring attention
* Emergency tool containing whistle, small compass, match striker, signalling mirror and small watertight storage for matches.
* Distress flares
* surplus paddle (cut into 3 sections for storage)
* Another signalling mirror ( I don’t desire only having one of anything that sinks)
* 3 x 1.5 litre containers of water
* 6 snap flouro light sticks
* compact 1st aid kit
* thermal blanket

I already own some nautical charts as I’m a sailer, but I figure I’ll just copy relevant sections and laminate the smaller sheets. I have a compass ready to be fitted as well as plans to make myself a small emergency bilge pump. The bilge pump is more a luxury, this can be done with a hand pump or sponges but I figure that if I do manage to flood the kayak it will be in some rough seas so I don’t want to remove the spray skirt to stuff around with a hand pump or bailers. Much better to just snap a switch and let the pump go for it.

The expeditions I have planned in the immediate future to test everything out are Green Island, Fitzroy Island for the Fitzroy Island New Years Eve Party, Low Isles Dunk Island and Snapper Island.

In the future I plan to do the Hinchinbrook channel and paddle all the way the island. This is all leading up to the big expedition of Great Barrier Reef. I can fit approximately 100 pounds of camping gear and supplies without becoming too unseaworthy, so this should get me where I want to go. And I can sometimes tow a trolling line to supplement my regular freeze dried diet with some fresh fish. I’ll also be stopping and camping so the barramundi gear will get a good work out too.
